Letter to Senator Cornyn Opposing Gonzales Nomination
Dear Senator Cornyn,
I believe that your support for Alberto is mis-guided. On your web site you have a banner that says "Defending the Constitution". How can you possibly say that and then endorse Alberto? His advice to the president goes against much of what the constitution stands for - public trials, enforcement of international treaties, prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment, balance of powers.
I am a Vietnam era veteran, my father faught in WWII and my uncle was a marine at Iwo Jima, and I can tell you that none of us would be proud of what Alberto has advised. He has also been strongly criticized by 12 retired Generals and by Colin Powell. He has caused America to lose it’s moral standing throughout the world.
I think your explaination of why Gonzales was right to defy the Geneva Convention is flawed because it ignores the fact that he is giving the president sole power over these prisoners without any approval or oversight from anyone. Isn’t that one of the reasons we rebelled against King George? I believe that this goes against the balance of power that our forefathers were so concerned about.
You said that "Judge Gonzales is truly an inspiration to everyone who still believes in the American dream." I believe that he has crushed the American dream and is responsible for the torture and death of many innocent people.
Gonzales is not an outstanding nomination. I believe that this appointment will be one of the defining actions that many Republicans, and most Americans, will come to regret. At some point, headlines like this will start to concern all Americans:
“Brit Ex-Guantanamo Inmates Spent Three Years there, but were never charged with any crimes. NEVER CHARGED. An outrageous abuse of power and just incredibly wrong…”
